An excellent article in its general thrust, but it falls down in the important places. Viz., “How about we ride with traffic as opposed to the wrong way on a one-way street? I know the idea of being told which way to go drives many bikers bonkers. That stuff is for cars, they say.” And, “Bikes don’t kill people; cars kill people. I know this, I feel this (big scar on head)…”
The problem is that *without* cars even maniac bikers are no problem. Indeed, let’s divvy out culpability as though we were assigning jail terms, or the rings of hell. Vehicularists are in the deepest part of hell, having destroyed the fabric of the modern city with their roads, causing oil wars, and destroying the planet. Bikers may be jerks at times, but they aren’t ethically far from pedestrians, doing no worse than occasionally coming up unannounced on pedestrians. In a better world, when the vehicularists are in hades, bikes would have “paths” and could go damn near as fast as they want.
